Over time, the Firefox interface has become gradually less cluttered, but for many people this is still not enough. Some web users like to have as clean an interface as possible and while any web browser can be switched to full-screen mode, this has the unfortunate side effect of hiding navigation controls and therefore necessitating switching between viewing modes.
LessChrome HD 2 is a free extension for Firefox that maximizes the amount of space that is given over to the display of web sites hiding unnecessary screen elements that normally get in the way. The tiny extension installs in seconds and does not require a browser restart, and you will immediately notice that your Firefox toolbar has changed.
Browser tabs are moved up to the title bar of the program, while the address bar and bookmarks toolbar are hidden from view - just hover the mouse over the tabs bar and they will pop back into view. The number of lightweight laptops currently on the market that feature smaller screens means that there is a huge market for this simple tool that makes the best possible use of space.
LessChrome HD 2 is only compatible with Firefox 4 and above. There are no options to configure for the extension at the moment, but Firefox's Add-ons pages can be used to enable, disable and uninstall it when required.
Note that this extension is experimental and could be both buggy and difficult to remove.
Verdict:
A handy extension for anyone working with a smaller screen, or who is looking to surf the web with fewer distractions.
