Free Language Translator is a desktop tool which uses Google to translate text and common document formats from one language to another.
The process starts by typing/ pasting text into the Input pane, or opening a file (just one, no batch processing here) in one of several formats: PDF, DOC/ DOCX, HTML, TXT, RTF, SUB, SRT.
As with the Google Translate site, you can then specify the source language, or have the program detect it automatically. Choose the destination language, click Translate and the new text appears in a second or two.
Unusual extras include support for custom dictionaries to improve the results, an "accuracy" score for measuring translation quality, and the ability to open some video files (MP4, AVI, MPEG etc) and find subtitles for them at opensubtitles.org.
Whatever you're doing, any translated text may be saved as a TXT file or copy and pasted wherever you like.
Version 3.9:
improved the Azure account creation workflow.
Verdict:
The interface needs a revamp, but Free Language Translator delivers where it matters: it's free, works as advertised, and you'll be using it productively within a couple of minutes.
