Secure Lockdown enables restricting your PC to run specific applications only (that is, a quick way to turn it into a kiosk system).

If you run a business and would like customers to be able to navigate some form of demonstration software, for instance, you probably don't want them to be able to close that application, Alt+Tab to something else, log out, restart your system or otherwise mess things up-- and that's where Secure Lockdown can help.

The program allows you to specify one or more applications which are allowed to be run. These are accessible to users from Secure Lockdown's own Circle Dock, and there's no desktop icons, Start Menu, Win+R, Explorer access or any other way to run anything else.

Secure Lockdown also optionally removes access to many other Windows features, including the taskbar, Start button, task manager, desktop right-click menu, Ctrl+Alt+Del functions, shutdown and restart options, system keypresses and more.

You can also keep your program window maximised, or have programs restarted if the user closes them.

We've linked to the Multiple Application edition here, but other versions of the program can restrict the user to a single application, or - maybe more interesting - run Internet Explorer or Chrome locked-down. Try one of the browser editions and you can also remove particular menu bars or options, block specific browser tasks (download, open, printing), even restrict browsing to certain websites.

Please note, if you lock down your own PC for testing, and forget the activation hotkey (Alt+Shift+S) and/ or whatever password you've set, then there's no easy way to recover. Be careful.

Verdict:

Secure Lockdown has some quirks (it incorrectly thought our test PC didn't have a keyboard, its restored "maximised" windows left an empty space where the taskbar would normally be), but nothing that interfered with its operations, and fine-tuning its many settings will probably help. Overall, it's a very quick and easy way to create a kiosk PC.
