AstroGif is a simple application which makes it easy to search for animated GIFs from your desktop.
The program runs in the background on your PC. It can be launched by clicking its system tray icon, or pressing its (customisable) hotkey, Ctrl+Alt+Space.
AstroGif opens with the focus on a textbox. You can immediately type a keyword - "cat", "happy", "breakfast" - and the program downloads and displays a matching animation.
To see more, keep hitting the Down arrow and the last animation will be replaced by another. Use the up arrow to move back up the list, if necessary.
Hitting Enter copies the image URL to the clipboard. There's no way to save or copy the image, unfortunately, so if you need a local copy you must download it separately.
A Settings box enables customising the global hotkey, copying the URL as markdown, restricting the GIF rating (set low by default to keep them child-friendly) and more.
Verdict:
AstroGif is a likeable GIF finder. It has plenty of room for improvement - in particular, it needs to be able to save a local copy of an image, not just the URL - but it's also a very new project and hopefully there's much more to come.
