Migrating data from one password manager to another can be a challenge. It's not in the interest of developers to help their users move somewhere else, and sometimes the process is extremely awkward.

The official instructions on getting your data from LastPass to 1Password, for instance, start by telling you that you must export your data from Firefox. Then you must download Strawberry Perl and other tools, use custom Perl commands to export specific areas of data, then manually import each file into 1Password.

LastPass to 1Password is an open-source tool which replaces this nightmare with an entirely automated process. Point the program at an exported LastPass CSV file and it generates a 1Password-compatible 1PIF file.

A post-conversion dialog enables opening 1Password immediately to import your data. It also includes options to securely delete both the exported and converted files after you've finished.

There are dangers with doing something like this. Any conversion program will by definition have access to all your credentials, which it could then save and send elsewhere.

We don't see any significant risks here as the program comes from NeoSmart Technologies, the veteran developer behind big-name tools like EasyBCD. But the company has made the source code available, if you're the cautious type, and if you're able, you'll get the most security by checking and compiling it yourself.

Verdict:

A quick and easy migration tool from a trusted developer.
