Childsplay is a suite of programs for younger children. These games are designed to entertain and educate at the same time, while also giving young children familiarity with computers. Childsplay is now part of a larger project, called Schoolsplay, but this is the most mature part of the project.

The games cover memory exercises, utilising numbers, letters, sounds and images, various puzzles that giuve different types of mental excercise and a number of classic arcade type games suitable for children such as Pacman. By comparison with GCompris, the range of games seems a lot more limited, but these are aimed at a narrower age range, many of the GCompris games would be unsitable for Childplay's intended audience. However, both programs are free, in every sense of the word, so there's no reason why you shouldn't install both if you have a younger child.

Now that the project has been enlarged into Schoolsplay, we can hope that future releases will contain a larger range of games.

Verdict:

A slightly limited choice of games, but a good addition if you have young children.
