Cockpit is a slightly unusual multi-app controller tool that can be used to automate the use of various applications from the menu bar. The program resembles the controls of a media player, and can be used to control the likes of iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, Safari and more.
As the program sits in the menu bar, it is always accessible, so no matter which application you are using Cockpit can be used to control any other program. There is built in support for seven standard applications by default, but plugins can be used to extend the capabilities of Cockpit.
Global hotkeys can be configured so that in addition to using the control panel to interact with programs, shortcuts can also be used. If you have become used to working with automator, actions can be dragged onto the application windows and workflows can also be run.
Whether you decide to use Cockpit to control applications, run scripts and tasks or launch applications, it can quickly become a real time saving tool. The level of customisation afforded to you means that Cockpit can be put to endless uses and fitted into your way of working.
Verdict:
A great way to automate working with your favourite apps, but be prepared for configuration and tinkering.
