The internet is chock a block with music, movies and all other kinds of audio and video – the problem is, getting it from the internet on to your Mac. Some websites don't make it easy to download their media content, while you might want to not just download that content, but transfer it to your iPod or other portable device. What's to do?
The answer lies with Grappler: this handy program lets you search the internet for audio and video files, then it automatically downloads and converts this into formats you can access on your Mac. It'll even add it to your iTunes library for easy access and syncing with other devices.
Once downloaded, unzip the application and drag it to your apps folder, then double-click it to launch. The program will prompt you to download additional components for converting video, and then you're good to go.
When it's up and running, everything you need to locate, view and download videos is found within Grappler's own program window. This is split into three: a browser pane, search box and clip tray. Type your search terms and a list of possible video matches will be displayed, complete with more information about the clip in question. View the clip in its own pop-up window by rolling the mouse over its thumbnail preview and clicking the play button, or click Download to save it to your hard drive, either as a video or – if you flick the switch next to the search box – as an audio-only track. You can also visit the actual web page the video's hosted on too: just click the arrow next to its title.
The trial version works for a maximum of 10 downloads before you have to register.
Verdict:
Gobsmackingly user-friendly and effective tool for finding and downloading video to your Mac for watching offline or transferring to a portable device.
