When you go out it is likely that you always have your phone with you, and if you are an iPad owner, it is likely that this is something that also makes it into your bag every time you leave the house. If you are using a library, college or work computer, there are times when it can be helpful to have a little extra, portable storage space such as a USB drive. But these drives are very easily left at home, and Phone Disk is a simple tool that enables you to use your iOS device as a storage medium.
This small utility provides you with an advanced disk mode that can be used on iOS devices regardless of whether they have been jailbroken. Mac users will sees their device in Finder just like any other drive, while Windows users need look no further than Explorer. Once installed and mounted, the software can be used to copy files to and from the device. If you have more than one iOS device – and iPod and iPhone for example, you can mount several at once to make it easy to move files between devices.
There are numerous ways in which the program can be used. We’ve already mentioned that you might want to use it to transport files from one computer to another, but it also provides you with a means of easily access the files you have created on your iOS device so you can work with them on your computer, and it also gives you an extra way of backing up your data.
Phone Disk is slightly expensive for what it does and there are similar tools available free of charge, but it does do its job well. The fact that there is no need for low level tinkering means that the software is accessible to a wider audience, but this also comes with the limitation that it is not possible to access system files – although this is not necessarily a bad thing.
Verdict:
Edging towards expensive, this is still a useful tool for anyone who wants greater control over how their iOS device is used.
