Just like your computer, your mobile and tablet can – over time – appear to slow down as you accumulate more apps and junk. Unlike iOS, Android is at least more transparent about file storage, making it easier for third-party apps to give you the tools you need to try and reclaim lost storage space, ditch the bloat and help restore a bit of zip to your mobile experience.
CCleaner is one of the best known cleanup tools for Windows, so it’s little surprise that Piriform has created an Android version. The app promises to remove the junk that slows your mobile down, plus reclaim storage space, browse more safely and monitor your system too.
Fire up the app and the first thing you’ll see is a useful bar chart telling you how much space is being used, both within your storage and RAM. Tap the Analyze button and after a short pause four areas will be scanned: cache, browser history, downloaded files and processes.
You’ll see a summary of what can be deleted and simply ticking the box and tapping Clean will do just that. Like the PC version, the app appears user-friendly and simple to browse, but there’s a downside – you can easily just click to clean things up without really knowing what you’re doing, and lose important data as a result.
Instead, tap a section header to reveal a breakdown of exactly what’s been found – this allows you, for example, to clear individual caches. Tap the menu button and choose Sort by cache size to get to the apps using up the most space. Deleting the cache can’t be done directly in CCleaner – it’ll automatically redirect you to the relevant settings screen, but it’s a shame you can’t select multiple apps from here.
Things are more promising with Downloaded Files and Processes where you can make multiple selections, but you can’t review your Browser History at all. There’s also a section for the "manual cleaning" of selected apps – tap one to visit its settings screen. How this differs from the Cache – where all these apps are also featured – isn’t made clear.
CCleaner also offers an App Manager tool – for quickly removing multiple applications in one go – and a System Info tool that displays CPU, RAM, storage and battery usage. Tap the menu button in the top left-hand corner of the screen to access these.
