Listen N Write is a free portable tool which makes it easier to transcribe audio or video files.

Launch the program and a simple media player window appears, along with a basic (but "good enough") text editor.

Open your media file, click Play and Listen N Write begins playback. But not in the usual way. By default the program plays 5 seconds of audio, pauses for a moment, jumps back a couple of seconds and starts playing again (as long as you're not still typing).

This might give you the time you need to transcribe your file, but if not you can hit Pause, or use Back and Forward (buttons or hotkeys) to jump backwards and forwards a few seconds.

Still too fast? You're able to adjust playback speed to something more comfortable.

A Bookmark system enables key sections in the file to be marked for speedy recall later.

We found the default settings worked well, but if you have any problems then all the key delays and features can be tweaked in a click or two via the Options menu.
