It is now quite some time since the classic music player WinAmp was updated. But despite development having stopped a number of years ago, the software still has an eager following. Although WinAmp is no longer officially supported – the last release came way back in 2013 – there are plenty of people keen to keep the stalwart media player alive.

An example of this is the WinAmp Community Update Project which aims to bring not only bug fixes and patches to the aging media player, but also new features and options. The team behind the software points out that you are free to pronounce the name as "wakeup" or "wac-up" as you see fit, but what is of greater interested here is the continuing support for the beloved WinAmp.

Among the features that WACUP is bringing to WinAmp is support for 4K video as well as adding more skins and better skin support. Numerous known bugs with the media player have been addressed, and this is an ongoing project that will help to fix more problems over time. There is an active community over on the WACUP website, and you are invited to not only test out the software, but also to participate in the forums to provide feedback, suggestions and requests.

Though the use of plugin modules, ever more advanced, interesting and exciting features can be added to the media player. Ultimately, the aim is for WACUP to become its own highly WinAmp compatible media player, and in the meantime, it helps to improve the overall WinAmp experience.

It's worth noting that WACUP is currently in beta testing, so it is not complete yet. This means that if you decide to work with either the preview or beta builds, you may encounter issues – but these will be ironed out over time.

Verdict:

Development is a little slow with WACUP, but it is certainly a utility to keep an eye on. It is a project that is born of love, and fans of WinAmp have a lot to look forward to as the software advances.
