F-Spot is a digital photo manager for the GNOME desktop. Designed to be easy to use, a new user can be importing and organising photos straight after installing it. The main browsing display has a timeline across the top of the window which uses a bar chart approach to show the quantities of photos taken in each month. Drag the slider along the timeline to display the photos taken around the time.
Of course, you don't always want to sort or search your photos chronologically, so F-Spot supports tagging of photos. There are a few standard tags defined, but you can add your own to make searching for photos by location, event or names of the people in them. Tagging information can be saved separately or in the EXIF comments of the photos. The latter is slower but means the tags are available when viewing the photos in other software.
F-Spot contains basic photo editing capabilities, the standard things that you want to do with photos like cropping, resizing, rotating, red eye removal, colour manipulation and some basic effects. It does not try to be a full blown graphical editor, and doing so would only spoil its ease of use. Photos can be imported from your hard disk or camera and can also be exported in a number of ways. These include various online photo sites, like Flickr, Picasa and Gallery, or exporting to a CD or DVD album.
Verdict:
Easy to use and accessible photo management software, best used on a GNOME desktop.
