Universal Extractor is a simple tool, with just one purpose in life - to extract the contents of just about every archive and installation file type around.
The program supports all the formats you'd expect, then - ZIP, TAR, RAR, CAB, SIT and so on. But it can also read older formats, including ACE, ARC, ARJ, LZH files and more. And Universal Extractor is able handle files that aren't so commonly supported in other archive tools, like Debian and Gentee packages.
There's strong coverage of installation files, too, with Universal Extractor able to work with many different EXE formats: Inno Setup, Installer Vise, InstallShield, NSIS, RoboForm, SetupFactory, Wise and others.
And Universal Extractor can also unpack some disc image formats (ISO, BIN/ CUE, CDI, NRG), compound Help and HTML files (CHM, HLP, MHT), Microsoft LIT e-books, even Outlook Express DBX mail files.
Usefully, the program analyses the structure of an archive to figure out which file type it is. So if an archive's file extension has been lost, this won't matter - Universal Extractor should still be able to unpack its contents.
Verdict:
A useful tool to have around, just in case you download a file that your regular archive utility can't handle
