Microsoft has released Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2010. Available in separate builds for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Office, Service Pack 1 is an essential update for all Microsoft Office 2010 users.

The update brings together all previously released updates, patches and fixes for all Office 2010 components, plus adds a number of additional changes that are exclusive to the SP1 release. Those who keep Office 2010 updated automatically will find Service Pack 1 available as an important update (but de-selected by default) by opening Windows Update; those who rely on manual updates should download the full 32-bit or 64-bit build depending on your version of Office.

A full list of changes, patches and fixes introduced in Service Pack 1 is available to read on the Microsoft Knowledgebase. Notable new and changed features are thin on the ground, but there are some worthy of mention.

Outlook 2010 SP1 gains full Office 365 support, while PowerPoint 2010 SP1’s Presenter view now defaults to showing the slideshow on a secondary display while offering the presenter’s notes through the primary display. Finally, OneNote 2010 SP1 adds a new “Open from web” option to the File menu to allow you to open notes directly from your Windows Live SkyDrive account, while other tools have been tweaked to make working with web-based notes easier.

Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2010 is available now: those who keep Office updated through Windows Update can choose to update through here – it’ll be a smaller download due to the fact existing updates won’t need to be applied; those looking to update a brand new installation of Office 2010 should download the standalone 32-bit or 64-bit build instead. Office 2010 – and therefore SP1 – requires a PC running Windows XP SP3, Server, Vista SP1 or 7.
