Miro 3.5 released: now includes conversion tools

22 October 2010, Nick Peers

The cross-platform, open-source media player Miro has reached a milestone release: version 3.5 introduces some new features alongside a slew of performance improvements and bug fixes. The headline new feature is Miro’s ability to convert video from one format to another, with 21 preset formats supported. Most of these are for portable devices such as the Apple iPod or PSP Portable, enabling you to quickly convert video to watch on the move. Miro also supports batch-processing – simply select your files, right-click and choose Convert to > your choice of format.

Other improvements include enhanced library management, thanks to improvements in tab display, sorting, item views and queued download handling, plus the ability to change the font and size of subtitles. Performance tweaks include optimising HTTP downloading to not only speed up downloads, but reduce the load on your computer’s CPU. Torrents also restart quicker than before, plus various bugs have been fixed.

Miro also handles a wide array of video formats with ease, and is designed to make it possible to get all your online video – whether it’s standalone downloads, video streams of even Torrents – from one central program. It’s available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
